Top 10 best beaches in Malta 1

Waves

The Maltese Islands have a plethora of beaches to choose from, all year round. Whilst every beach has its own characteristics which make it a delightful place to be, the following beaches (in no particular order) are in my personal top 10.

1. Blue Lagoon, Comino

This popular beach is undoubtedly Comino’s main attraction. It is a shallow bay with crystal clear azure water where you can swim, snorkel, relax and enjoy the breathtaking views the island has to offer. You can get to Comino by ferry or by booking a day-trip on a boat. Whatever option you choose, it is recommended to get there early as it gets really busy especially in July and August. Film enthusiasts may recognize this beach from the 2004 movie Troy.

2. Għar Lapsi, Siggiewi

This natural swimming pool located to the west of Malta is a lovely place to admire life beneath the sea. The clear blue water always feels fresh and is the perfect location for snorkelling. It starts off shallow and gets deeper the further out you go. It is suggested that one wears beach/ swim shoes as the rocks may be sharp. In the vicinity there are several restaurants which are known for their delicious fresh fish caught daily.

3. Golden Bay, Mellieha*

This family-friendly sandy beach is a favourite among the Maltese. The beautiful golden sand, views of unspoiled and undeveloped countryside and easy access to food and drink makes this beach ideal to spend an entire day there. You can get there easily by both car and bus, however parking may be a slight problem on sundays and public holidays due to the beach’s popularity. The ability to have barbecues make it a hotspot for picnics and parties. It is an idyllic site to watch sunset whilst enjoying a cocktail on the beach. If you intend on staying there till late, you should take lamps and torches along with you as there is no lighting.

4. Imġiebaħ Bay, Selmun

Imġiebaħ is a secluded sandy beach ideal for a peaceful and relaxing day by the shore. It is recommended to access the beach on foot, as the route requires a lovely trek through narrow and twisted country roads. This beach isn’t well-known by tourists and locals so chances are you might have an entire beach for yourself. With no amenities in the vicinity it is important to pack enough food and drink for your outing. Although difficult to access, it is a true reward once reached.

5. Mellieha Bay, Mellieha*

Undoubtedly Malta’s largest and most popular beach, Mellieha Bay is a place synonymous with a day on the beach in Malta. It is a great beach overflowing with restaurants, places for sunbed and umbrella hire, and water sports and games (such as crazy sofas, bananas and a whole inflatable park). The clear sea sometimes gives off greenish blue hues due to the shallow sandbed underneath. It’s ideal for children and people who aren’t great swimmers as it starts off shallow and progressively gets deeper, making it great to play with balls, frisbees and all sorts of games.

6. Mġarr ix-Xini, Sannat, Gozo

Mġarr ix-Xini is a rocky, secluded beach located in Malta’s sister island Gozo. Getting there isn’t for the faint-hearted as it requires a walk down a steep track. Having said that, it is totally worth it. A serene and calm atmosphere where you can swim, snorkel (this beach is known for having many fish), relax and jump off rocks is what you’re expected to face. There’s also a lovely restaurant where you can dine and enjoy the view of this small bay. Movie lovers may recognize this beach from By the Sea starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

7. Paradise Bay, Mellieha*

Paradise Bay really and truly lives up to its name! It boasts beautiful golden sand and clear sea with amazing shades of blue. You can also spot Comino and Gozo whilst sipping a cocktail or smoothie on your deckchair. Snorkeling a bit outside the safety nets is highly recommended for enthusiasts of sea creatures and fish. One can enjoy lunch or dinner at the lido and buy floaties, snorkeling equipment and other miscellaneous items from the shop located there too. Given this beach’s magnificent beauty, it tends to get busy especially on weekends and public holidays, so it is suggested that you get there early to find and pick your preferred spot!

8. Ramla Ħamra Bay, Xagħra, Gozo*

Ramla Ħamra Bay is Gozo’s largest sandy beach and one of its main attractions. With clean blue waters, raw and unspoiled natural surroundings, together with this marvelous sand of a reddish hue (hence the name Ramla Ħamra = red sand) it is bound to be a favourite among families, locals and tourists, as well as snorkelers. It is extremely child friendly with tonnes of sand to play with and shallow waters that get deeper the further out you go. Definitely not a site to miss when visiting Gozo!

9. Għajn Tuffieħa (Riviera Martinique), Mġarr*

Many tend to give up as soon as they see those 160+ steps down to this beach, but they are guaranteed to miss out on so much. Ravishing sand with untouched, immaculate views and fresh turquoise waters are what Riviera has to offer. You need not pack your entire house with you as there is a small shop before the stairs with all your beach necessities, together with a restaurant where you can sit and dine whilst enjoying the sounds of crashing waves, or take your food to go and devour it whilst sitting on the fine sand. Not only is this beach gorgeous in the summer, but its surroundings are heaven for lovely trek in the non-summer seasons.

10. San Blas Bay, Nadur, Gozo

Last but certainly not least is this stunning sandy bay, often referred to as Ramla Ħamra Bay’s sister beach. It enjoys the same type of reddish sand which is divine to look at and feel under your feet. If you’re looking for somewhere peaceful and secluded, this is the beach for you! It’s located at the end of a beautiful fertile valley, with no buildings to marr the view. The way down to the beach is steep and you can only get there on foot as the last part of the road is closed to traffic.
